King Billy 1690

  1. In 1690 the deposed King James II attempted to re-capture his throne with the aid of French troops by way of Ireland, whose Catholic population, he believed, might support him. He soon captured most of Ireland, until King William’s forces drove him out. It took some time for William to regain control in Ireland.
  2. Monetary Crisis (1690’s) & William III’s Great Re-coinage of 1696 The Old Currency Exchange / July 19, 2015 The Great Re-coinage of 1696 was an attempt by the English Government under King William III to finally replace the hammered silver that made up most of the coinage in circulation, much of it being clipped and badly worn.

King Billy's 1690 victory was a minor military triumph, but a landmark in British affairs, says Derek Brown. Wed 12 Jul 2000 11.03 EDT. T oday is battle of the Boyne day, marking the 310th.

There's a famous painting now that everybody knows,
It stands upon a gable wall over Sandyrow,
In memory of King William and brethren who did join,
They fought for our deliverance, at the battle of the Boyne.
